I'll stick my neck out to say I'm one of those weird ones who really liked their self-titled debut from 1996. Those heavy songs are varied and interesting (you've got the stringed Collide, the post-grunge Savior, and the alt-metal My Obsession, for example), but they all still sound like they belong on the same album. You've got 2 ballads and 8 or 9 bangers (depending on if you have the 2003 or 2004 version). After that, he wrote teen-music for two albums and now he's all about victory anthems. Personally, I think Skillet peaked lyrically on Hey You, but Collide and Comatose are close seconds. The lyrics marked the change from John writing "church music" to John writing "human music." He writes about real things that other people can relate to. Ben Kasica was a classically trained child prodigy and it showed in his riff-work. The riffs are creative while also being aggressive. If you consider Awake very good, we probably don't value the same things in music.
