She's an amazing player.īen was merely 18 when he recorded the album, and John said he wrote all the acoustic riffs in there. Lori's drum patterns on that album alone beat anything Jen could've come up with IMO they're so groovy (Energy's verses, for example) and so powerful (Fingernails). It set the ground for many things that affected Skillet's tone in the years to come, and on its own, it's an amazing album. The whole interview is here if you wanna hear the rest of his thoughts And he says can't really listen to the album because he remembers how stressful it was to make this record. He wrote 75 songs, there was a lot of pressure to live up to the success of Awake and too many people got involved in the production so there were a lot of arguments.

  • Rise - because he hated the process of making this album.
  • Unleashed - He prefers the songs on this to Awake.
  • Awake - because of Monster (although John said it's not his favorite record in terms of sound).
  • Comatose - when the game changed for Skillet.
  • If it's of interest to anyone, I heard an interview this year where John was asked to rank his top 3 favorite and bottom three leave favorite Skillet albums and he said: Maybe it was cos of where I was at in life when I was listening to it, but I loved that post-grunge Nirvana-like sound.īUT I also enjoy the other end of the spectrum of the Skillet sound - the sound/lyrics they currently have with Unleashed and Victorious, where the string arrangements and John/Jen vocals have become their signature sound. I'll stick my neck out to say I'm one of those weird ones who really liked their self-titled debut from 1996. Those heavy songs are varied and interesting (you've got the stringed Collide, the post-grunge Savior, and the alt-metal My Obsession, for example), but they all still sound like they belong on the same album. You've got 2 ballads and 8 or 9 bangers (depending on if you have the 2003 or 2004 version). After that, he wrote teen-music for two albums and now he's all about victory anthems. Personally, I think Skillet peaked lyrically on Hey You, but Collide and Comatose are close seconds. The lyrics marked the change from John writing "church music" to John writing "human music." He writes about real things that other people can relate to. Ben Kasica was a classically trained child prodigy and it showed in his riff-work. The riffs are creative while also being aggressive. If you consider Awake very good, we probably don't value the same things in music.
